About pattern recognition

It is the human ability to recognise patterns and, in turn, create and manipulate symbols that allows us to make sense of our environment and give meaning to our lives. My new exhibition, Pattern Recognition, continues my investigation into these ideas.

When we see the world, we interpret it through our language, culture and symbols. This practice is so innate that we are rarely aware of it. In taking images from the natural world and overlaying them with the symbols of many cultures, I'm attempting to make the viewer aware of this natural human condition.

My hope is that by becoming aware of and understanding this process, we can go some way towards controlling it. Our thoughts and behaviour need not be slaves to our biology and culture. As humans the world over face environmental disaster, ideological extremism, war and intolerance, this message is as important now as it has ever been.

Covered in layers of densely-packed information, the paintings in Pattern Recognition offer any number of possible patterns, with millions of potential interpretations.

It is my hope that this work not only encourages the viewer to create their own meaning, but invites them to consider the way in which meaning is constructed, and how we might take control of this process to create a better future.

Urban Geodes - Paige Smith

Artist Paige Smith fills cracks in walls and other forgotten city spaces with paper and resin geodes. I love the juxtaposition of natural and unnatural. her subtle installations capture the imagination and invite you to look at your environment with fresh eyes.

I draw inspiration from quiet, modest, tucked away spaces: the cracks in between bricks, the grating of a drain, the inside of a pipe and interior of a derelict phone booth.

About PATTERN RECOGNITION

Pattern Recognition is one of the principal strategies the human brain has evolved to make sense of the world around us. The patterns we perceive shape our world view and determine our behaviour.

Covered in layers of densely-packed information, the paintings in Pattern Recognition offer any number of possible patterns, with millions of potential interpretations. Picciani's work forces the observer to try and make sense of the paintings and create their own meaning.
