Rossella Picciani is an Italian-born artist living and working in Melbourne, Australia. Picciani has exhibited in Australia and the USA. Her work has been applied to furniture, homewares, soft furnishings and accessories.

Sources
Picciani first became interested in symbols while studying graphic design. She draws on mysticism, Jungian psychology, extinct languages, cartography, scientific notation and information graphics. She then layers these symbols and icons over images of fossils, landscapes and the human figure. Subjects can be as small as a virus to larger than a galaxy.

The Work
Picciani works predominantly in acrylic on canvas, before embellishing her works with metallic enamels, coloured varnishes, glass beads and other media, such as fragments of lacework and pieces of ephemera.

The resulting surfaces are dynamic, filled with shifting depths and light – encouraging viewers to actively engage with her work: “My works interact with the observer, shifting and changing as they move around it.”

Picciani has stopped trying to explain her work. “I try to express myself through my work. It’s up to the observer to find their own meaning.”
